Allen Christopher Nichols killed George Mattthews on Nov. 27, 1883, in St. Clair County, Alabama. The account of this death sounds like self defense, as reported in the Dec. 5, 1883, issue of Southern Aegis, Ashville, Alabama. However, even if innocent, Allen did run away to Rains County, Texas, where he concealed his identity from the law by assuming the name of his deceased brother, John William Nichols. Allen's tombstone is marked Capt. John William Nichols, although the tombstone correctly marked the birthdate for Allen.

Conflicting records exist for the date of John William Nichols' death. Some sources indicate John died Sep. 19, 1861, during the Civil War with rank of Private. Other sources indicate that he was captured during the Civil War and pardoned in 1865 — with death prior to 1883, when the identify of John William Nichols was assumed by Allen Christopher Nichols.
No records are known to exist for Mary Frances Humphries, for any children, or for the burial place of John William Nichols.

Lemuel Griffin Nichols, Rains County Leader, June 1910
Mr. L.G. Nichols, known among his many friends as Uncle Griff, died early Monday morning at the home of his son-in-law, C.W. Weaver, about one and one-half miles south of Emory. He was nearly seventy years old and had been afflicted with cancer for a number of years. He was a generous and kind-hearted man and has borne his affliction with great patience, but weary of suffering and waiting, he lay down to rest.
"Tired, ah, yes! so tired dear,
I soundly slept to-night,
With never a dream and never a fear,
To wake in the morning light.""He had filled the various relations of life, as son, husband, father, brother, friend-and filled them well. But he is gone! Another name is stricken from the ever-lessening roll of ex-Confederates and old settlers, and a solitary woman in the sunset of life, and a lonely home are left to attest how sadly they will miss him.
"His remains were interred in the Emory Cemetery about 5:30 o'clock Monday evening.
"The Leader sympathizes with the bereaved family."
Sarah Jane Clemonts Nichols, Rains County Leader, Dec. 1910
"The remains of Mrs. L.G. Nichols arrived in Emory last Friday evening from Denton County, where she had died the night before. The Leader representative failed to learn the nature of her illness.
"Her husband, Uncle Griff, as he was called by his friends, passed on before a few months ago, and they were among the pioneer settlers of the county. Grandma Nichols was a sweet tempered and lovable Christian woman, and her many friends and acquaintances will be grieved to hear of her death.
"Her remains were interred in the city cemetery at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, Rev. Heidicks conducting the funeral service.
"The Leader offers condolences to the bereaved relatives."
"Looking back a little more than one hundred years ago...
"...we find the Lemuel Griffin Nichols family, who settled in Rains County on a farm about one and one-half miles south of Emory.
"He and his wife, Sarah Clement Nichols, already had seven of their ten children born either in Arkansas or Grayson County, Texas, before moving to Rains County. They were: Texanna; Ellen, who died before her second birthday; Dora Melinda; Pinkney Dean; Belle, who died before age two; Myrta Adeline; Johnnie, who died at age four after the family reached Rains County; Leona Pairlee, born in 1883, was their first child born at their new home near Emory; Clara Effie; and William Clifton, who his doting father called 'Boy.'
"Lemuel Griffin Nichols and Sarah James Clement were traveling with their families and several other families in a "wagon train," leaving their St. Clair County Alabama homes, probably in late summer of 1866. Griffin and Sarah married Sept. 21, 1866 on the road "somewhere in Arkansas. Some of the families settled in Clark County and Hot Springs County, Arkansas, but others chose Texas for their new homes.
"Sarah Clement's parents lived northeast of Quitman in Wood County. Sarah's mother was Cynthia Foreman Clement, a granddaughter f William Barnhill, Jr. The land they settled on was a part of the league of land, granted her grandfather, William Barnhill, Jr., from the State of Texas about 1836. The land later became a part of Wood County.
"Some other families probably traveling with the Nichols and Clement families could have been Barber, Foreman, Barnhill, Dearing, and Stedman, as the federal census of 1820 and 1830 shows them living as neighbors in St. Clair County, Alabama. Lemuel Griffin Nichols' father, William Nichols, married Nancy Barber there. Nancy's father, Gray Barber, married Charlotte Stedman.
"Sarah Clement Nichols' father, Issac Clement, married Cynthia Foreman, daughter of Samuel and Ann Barnhill Foreman. Many of these families came from the men fought in the Creek Indian War, as St. Clair, Alabama was originally Creek Indian Territory.
"Lemuel Griffin and Sarah Clement Nichols raised their family on the farm south of Emory with cotton as his main crop. He was also a stockman. Their seven children, who lived to adulthood, married in Rains County. Texanna married James Redick in 1892; Dora Melinda married James Houston Greer in 1890; Pinkney Dean married Carrie Fennell in 1894. On December 23, 1908, my mother, Myrta Nichols, and father, A.J. (Lon) Meyer, were married. Pairlee and Tom Northcutt married in 1903; Cara Effie married C.W. Weaver in 1904. The baby of the family, Clifton, married Eva Chapman in April of 1909.
"After their last child married, the lives of "Uncle Griff" and "Aunt Sally" were almost at an end, as they both died in 1910. They are buried in the Emory City Cemetery.
"As one of their granddaughters, I like to think that they made good citizens of what was a rather young country during their lifetime. I wish that I had been privileged to know them, but their lives had ended before mine had begun. To their memory dedicate this short account of their lives."

Golda's Mill near Stillwell in Adair County, Oklahoma
"During the holidays, try renting the [1973 movie] classic, Where The Red Fern Grows. The old stone mill in the movie was built by Pink Ervin Nichols, father of Clark (Papa). AndyB, John, Narcie, and Clarence have visited it."
— Margaret Kuenzler, Nov. 30, 1999Pink Nichols worked on the mill in 1882 for its owner, Dr. Nicholas Bitting. The mill had an overshot water wheel 20 feet in diameter. The original wooden wheel was replaced by a steel wheel in 1908. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the mill was in operation until 1983, when destroyed by fire.(10)

"I am sure that Nichols go a long way back in Rains County, but I only knew when my grandfather Pink came. I can remember a story my father, Clark Nichols, told many times about when and he and his cousin were twelve years old and were squirrel hunting in the Sabine River bottom.
"They heard a panther scream and they started running, then when it screamed again, they dropped their guns and squirrels so they could run faster. When they arrived at his uncle's house, Uncle Griff said they did not hear a panther scream because there wasn't any in Rains County.
"Just before Uncle Griff died, and after my father was a grown man, he told him that it really was a panther they heard. He didn't want the boys to be afraid to go hunting, and he knew they would be if they had known it really was a panther."
— Velma Nichols Short, Rains County History, 1980, p. 110.
"Clark and Narcie's oldest child, Homer Andrew, died in July 1909. A month later on August 8, 1909... Papa's 21st birthday, Papa went to sit with a sick man. Because there were no hospitals in the area, people would take turns sitting with the sick. Mama was mourning the loss of her baby and did not want to be left alone, so she went down the road to the neighbors to spend the night. In the early morning hours, the neighbor woke Mama to tell her that her house was burning. Her baby's pictures and other things were burned, along with her little dog."
— Margaret Kuenzler, Nov. 30, 1999
"On May 25, 1943, Papa [Andrew Clark Nichols] was plowing with his John Deere tractor when it ran out of gas. A huge wheel on the side had to be turned to start it. Because none of the "big boys" were around to help him, Papa left it running. While he was filling it with gas, a spark from the tractor caught Papa's clothes on fire.
"Aubrey (Unc Cotton), who was 14 at the time, ran for water. Papa tried to remove his Levis but he had a belt on with a big western buckle and was not able to do so. Mr. Lewis Richards and son Wayne were traveling down the road to Gilland when they saw Papa afire, rolling on the ground. Mr. Richards and Wayne had to lay on Papa to smother the flames.
" Papa was taken to the hospital in Knox City, where he was not expected to live. Aunt Cloris stayed with him at the hospital, while her sisters took care of Darrell Gene. After 80+ days, Papa went home. However, two weeks later, Aunt Bea and Uncle Earl took him to Dallas. For two years, he was in and out of Baylor Hospital, as he required intense therapy and skin grafts.
" Uncle Lawton would shave him as well as the other 10 patients in the ward. Aunt Velma took care of the "paper work" and she was able to obtain funds to cover the huge medical expense. It was a very difficult time for Papa, his kids, and their families.
"It was during WWII and Ervin, A.C., and Dale were overseas. My mom and Ervin, Jr. stayed with Aunt Velma and Uncle Bob. Later, Papa always wore long sleeves and was not able to straighten many of his fingers."
— Margaret Kuenzler, Oct. 27, 1999
"In 1959, Papa was able to visit with his favorite cousin, Clifton Nichols in Crystal City, TX. There was only nine months difference in their age. Cousin Cliff was working in a furniture store.; When Papa entered the store, he saw a man's back with red hair, speaking fluent Spanish. The man turned and said, "Can I help you?" In which Papa replied, "Yes, if you're Cliff Nichols." Cousin Cliff immediately threw his arms around Papa and wept, " Clark, I thought you died in the fire." They had not seen each other in 34 years. Papa died in 1960."
