William Barbor was by religion a Protestant — a faith for which he almost lost his life. England's Queen Mary, who reigned 1553-1558, was a devout Catholic, and she sanctioned persecution of Protestants as part of her scheme to return England to Roman Catholicism. William's last-minute escape from burning at the stake is commemorated in the Barbor Jewel, which portrays Queen Elizabeth I.
"William Barbor was, for his religion, in the reign of Queen Mary, brought to the stake in Smithfield to be burned, but before the fire was lighted, news came of the queen's death, and the execution was stopped."
— William Jones, History and Mystery of Precious Stones, London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1880; page 112
Victoria & Albert Museum, London, England: museum catalog
The tradition holds that this jewel was commissioned by William Barbor (1540-86) to commemorate his escape from being burnt at the stake as a heretic during the reign of Queen Mary — the escape deriving from the accession of Elizabeth I.
William Barbor may have owned the cameo of Elizabeth I, but the current setting dates from about 1615-25, suggesting that William's family regarded the essential element in the jewel as the cameo, while the setting was changed to keep the jewel in fashion. Gabriel Barbor believed that William had laid down that the jewel was to descend to his eldest son, but only if he had a daughter and named her Elizabeth: 'this is the account as it has been handed down from father to son, and hitherto there has always been an Elizabeth in the family'.
The will of John Barbor in 1757 stated that the jewel should pass to his brother John, but, if he had no children, to his brother Richard. Richard's daughter, Elizabeth, who had married Henry Prescott Blencowe in 1774, inherited the jewel on her father's death.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of August 1842.

"There was apparently bad blood between James Barber and his son Allen Barber, as Allen was not named in the will of James. And Allen's legacy was retained by Griffin Barber. James Barber did go to court about 1841 in Clarke County to get something back from Allen that belonged to James." — David Morgan (2)

Mars Hill Baptist Church, Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia
Mars Hill Baptist Church is one of the oldest established churches in Georgia — established in July, 1799. At that time, the church was located at the very edge of the American Frontier and points west were referred to as Indian Territory on contemporary maps. James and Penelope Barber were members of this church as early as 1803. (2)
