Conflicting information exists for men named Reuben Allen and wives named Ingebo. One set of data shows that Reuben Allen (1722-1751) was married to Ingebo Hughes; another shows that Reuben Allen II (1721-1751) was married to Ingebo Byrd (she, the daughter of Lt. Andrew Byrd and Magdalena Jones (Jonnsson), the daughter of Mounce (Mouns) Jonason and Ingeborg Pettersdatter Lycon, Swedish from Pennsylvania). Additional sources show that Ingabourg Byrd, daughter of Lt. Andrew Byrd and Magdelena Jones Jonnsson, was married to a different man: Cornelius Ruddle.
It is known that Reuben Allen II died early and left a son, Reuben Allen III, for guardianship by a man named Burr Harrison. Records dated March 28, 1769, for the termination of guardianship for Harrison's ward, Reuben Allen III, took place when Reuben Allen III reached his 21st birthday. (3) (This document has been used to fix that the year of birth for Reuben Allen III was 1748 and that his parents Reuben and Ingebo had been married by 1747.
Hypothesis for further testing:
- The 1851 death of Reuben Allen II also left another child, Rebecca Allen, b. 1850, in need of guardianship.
- An Allen-Byrd family alliance, specifically the household of Ingabourg Byrd and Cornelius Ruddle, was the foster home of Rebecca Allen.
- This foster home the source of the belief that Rebecca's birth mother was Ingebo Byrd, not Ingebo Hughes.
This hypothesis is supported by statements by Thomas E. and Edna P. Kirby that Rebecca "had an Allen dowry... and was consolidating it with Francis' [her husband's, Francis Hughes'] assets. (6)
The circumstances that required guardianship of Ingeobo Hughes' children after the death of Reuben Allen II are unknown. Ingebo Hughes subsequently was remarried to a man named John Skeen.
Reuben Allen II purchased from his Uncle Ralph Allen of Rhode Island the 400 acres of land at Mt. Jackson which formerly belonged to Benjamin Allen. In 1749 Reuben II obtained a Grant from Lord Fairfax of 625 acres adjoining the north side of the 400 acres. These two tracts of land extended from the Triplett School in Mt. Jackson to the land of Joseph Hawkins at Hawkinstown. (4)

Rueben Allen III's wife, Lydia Ann Moore, was Reuben's first cousin. Lydia was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Allen) More. Lydia was dismissed by the Quaker faith for marrying a non-Quaker and a first cousin — both contrary to Quaker discipline.
In the American Revolution, Reuben Allen III was one of the 67 Virginians who served on the Commander in Chief's guard. Reuben III was wounded in service, and while home on furlough he died of his wounds in 1779.
"Reuben wrote his will shortly before his death, and it was probated the 25th of November 1779. He named his wife Lydia and his five children, with a bequest to Mary Brinker, daughter of Conrad. He named as Executors "..his friends and relations Jackson, Joseph and Reuben Alen and John, Reuben and Joseph Moore". John, Reuben and Joseph Moore were his wife's brothers.Jackson and Joseph Allen were his Uncles and Reuben Allen was his cousin, son of Jackson Allen." (5)
