Mr. O. K. Pouncey
Bolling, Alabama

My Dear Sir:

Your letter of the 12th inst. has been received and I take pleasure in replying to give you any information I can relation to the Pouncey family, but regret that this information is limited.

The first I know of the history is that our ancestors are of Irish, that three brothers were exiled from Ireland some 150 years ago and all of these settled on the Pee Dee River, S.C. and all the Pounceys (spelling their name "Pouncey") in the U. S. descended from those 3 brothers.

I do not know their first names, but understand they were soldiers in the revolutionary war, as also was my grandfather Samuel Pouncey, he being a son of one of the same 3 brothers, but I do not know which one of these.

After that war my grandfather (Samuel Pouncey) married and immigrated to Montgomery County, Ala and settled in 3 miles of the city of Montgomery.

He had the following sons: John, who died in Butler Co. about the beginning of the civil war. John had A. W. Pouncey, Wm Pouncey, Frank Pouncey, Daniel Pouncey, Calvin and George Pouncey.

A. W. Pouncey came to Texas before the war of the  rebellion and raised a large family.  His oldest son, Frank Pouncey now lives at Rogers, Miland County Texas, with whom you can correspond for particulars as to his father's family.   Next Samuel Pouncey who went to Miss, and I know nothing of his family.

Next Elder Wm J. Pouncy who raised a family in & near Montgomery & Troy, Ala. dying at the latter place about 26 years ago.  He had 4 wifes; 6 children by his 4th wife.  You can get his history of this family by addressing a daughter of Wm J to wit, Mrs. J. G. Long, Gatesville, Texas.

Next son of Samuel Pouncey, was Peter Pouncey (my father), who died about the year 1840, leaving a wife and 5 children, oldest Mary Norman, died in Augt 1897, 2nd Rebecca Davis, now living at Naftel Ala. Mrs. P. A. Brady, Mt. Carmel, Ala, next myself, and Wm J. Pouncey who died in Louisiana at Farmville, La about 1850.  I am the youngest of my father's family living,my age 64 years.

Note that this letter... presents certain aspects of Pouncey history which conflict with the information presented in the Pouncey Line.

Three immigrant brothers, outcasts from Ireland, may be from another line of the author's family.  They aren't from the Pouncey line, which has been documented back to Virginia.

This should not, however, diminish enjoyment from reading this letter.   The author presents his own voice and shares his knowledge of generations closer to him.
