Dew Precursors
Joldewin de Due
Joldewin de Due was given land by English King Henry III for his faithful service in a war with barons. This war forced Henry III to adopt major reforms documented in the Provisions of Oxford, 1258.
Giles Dewes
Giles Dewes was librarian to English Kings Henry VII (reigned 1485 - 1509) and Henry VIII (reigned 1509 - 47), instructor of French to Prince Arthur (married Catherine of Aragon in 1501, died 1502) and Princess Mary (b. 1516, daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, the future queen Mary I).

Thomas Dew lived in St. Dunstan, London, England. His will was dated March 13, 1624.
A stationer was a person who sold books and materials for writing and publishing.
The complete works of Shakespeare include a curious play called "The Troublesom Raigne of King John". Thomas Dew owned exclusive publishing rights to it in 1622. Dew wasn't the printer, but producer of the book. Dew hired a man named August Mathewes to print the book.
Yet Dew got the profits from the book, which Dew sold in his London bookshop. Dew could have also sold to other booksellers who wanted to stock that particular book. Once the print run was sold out, Dew would have been the one to decideif and when to have another edition printed. He could have also sold the rights to another printer, or leave it to his heirs when he died.

"John Dewe apparently returned to England to be educated, probably living with some of his English Dew relatives. (1)
"Mentioned in the will [of John Dewe I] was only one child, John Dew Jr, a son. Not mentioned in the will was Lewis Dew, who may have been a posthumous child. His name is recorded only one time, when it appeared in Chowan County, NC, June 7, 1715. (12)" — Sarah Mae Dew
DNA testing raises concerns about traditionally accepted family lines.
"In the late 1930s, Ernestine Dew White published GENEALOGY OF SOME OF THE DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS DEW COLONIAL VIRGINIA PIONEER IMMIGRANT. Until recently, this book has been the primary published source for DEW / DUE genealogy.
The early results of the DEW Surname DNA Project is calling into question the family connections made by Mrs. White in her book. The Dew Project has identified six genetically unrelated Dew families, two in England and four in the United States.
In addition, a careful reading of Mrs. White's book reveals that while she connects a number of early immigrants to North America, with the Dew surname, to Colonel Thomas Dew of Nansemond, Virginia, she cites no documentary evidence to support those connections. She claims John Dewe, d. 1678, Isle of Wight County, was the son of the Colonel; this connection is not supported by the text of the will, as John Dewe's father is referred to, but not named.
The Colonel received no head rights for anyone with the Dew surname. It is not reasonable that members of his family would have immigrated to Virginia without head rights being granted. The whole purpose of immigration was to acquire land. If you have based your Dew family genealogical research on this book, it is highly likely you have the wrong ancestors."

Census of 1790, Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Reuben Dew appeared in this census with two sons over 16, three daughters, and five slaves.
South Carolina archives contain several land transaction for Reubin Dew. The earliest dates from 1784, transcribed from microfilm by Sarah Mae Dew (1), as follows:
"I have caused to be admeasured and laid out unto Reubin Dew a tract of land, containing two hundred acres, situated in the District of George town, on the N. E. Side of the Bigg [Big] Peedee and hath such form and marks, butting and bounding as the above plat represents. Certified for the twenty eighth Day of July, 1784. Signed John Dozer, D.S. Epraim Mitchell, Surveyor-General."
The plat indicated tree markings and placement around the property, referencing a maple on a side of Back Gum Swamp, small pine trees, a hickory marked 3X, a sweet gum tree, a large pine tree, stakes marked 3X, a black gum tree, a red oak tree, and a corner by a post oak tree.
South Carolina archives document five additional land transactions for Reubin Dew, as follows:
- 244 acres surveyed Apr. 2, 1788, in the District of Georgetown on the W side of Reedy Creek, bounded by a line running ME L NW(?) by land granted to John Hamilton, NW and NE by land granted on or near Michael Clackers, and on the other side by vacant land.
- 341 acres surveyed on November 22, 1790, situated on the SW side of the Little Peedee, on the west side of Reedy Creek, and hat such shape and form and marks as the above plat, which lists lines running SWNW and SE by Reubin Dew's land, and lines running SWNW and SE by land surveyed for Joseph Hays, SE and SW by land surveyed for Jermiah and James Brown, and NE by lines of the Estate of James Batchellors.
- 500 Acres survey for him the 1st day of December, 1795, situated in Georgetown on Terrel Bay, bounded by line running NW by land granted to Anthony Sweet and Boluntine Rowell, and on the other side by vacant land.
- 130 acres surveyed October 17, 1807, situated in Charleston District on Fitch Branch, waters of the Ashesoo River or bay waters of Island Creek, bounded on the South by John Loisey's land, and to the east by Thomas Dillion's land, on the West, on or near Mrs. Conaly's land.
- 93 acres surveyed December 21, 1813, situated in the Charleston District on Pinney Creek, and waters of ___ Jones bounded by a line running SE and NE by Frances Bullon's land, SE by James Bruton's land, and SW by M. Cuttel's land.
Sarah Mae Dew, from her research on the Dew family in Virginia and the Carolinas, has published this observation about literacy education: (1)
"...it is apparent that even though many of the early Dew heads of families had accumulated much land, and were held in high esteem in their communities, many of them were illiterate... the education of the first several generations was left to the initiative of each family...
"Many young people came to maturity without knowledge of how to read and write. The latter was particularly true of girls in the household. Records show that the man or father who headed the household knew how to write, but the mother and wife had to make her mark."

The Dew-Pouncey alliance can be documented back to John Dew, Sr., who served as an executor in 1810 for the estate of a man named Francis Burton. Additional executors for this estate were (1) Christopher Dew, Sr., (2) Henry Berry, the brother of Mary Berry Dew, the wife of Christopher Dew, Sr., and (3) Elizabeth Burton Pouncey, mother of the deceased Francis Burton through her first husband, Thomas Burton..
John Dew, Sr., borrowed $3,300 from his cousin, Henry Berry, in 1836. John Dew, Sr., used this sum of money to finance a trip to Mississippi, where he wished to purchase land. John Dew, Sr., used his South Carolina land as security for the loan from Henry Berry. The text of this note reveals that Henry Berry and John Dew, Sr., were neighbors...
"Deed No. 384... Bounded o the East and North by H. Berry's land, and on the North and West by John Hay's land, and on the West by Stephen Berry's land, and on the South by H. Berry's land."
John Dew, Sr., purchased land in Leake County, Mississippi, where he moved his family shortly after 1836.

Overview provided by Sarah Mae Dew, 1988 (1)
"Harry Lee Dew was engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years. He worked for various companies and stores, and then had his own business in Parkdale, Ashley County, Arkansas. He and his family moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, in 1929. (His obituary states that the date was 1927; but family members state that the date should have read 1929.) Some years later he and his son-in-law were in business together in the Dew-Orr Department Store in Arkadelphia.
"After graduating from high school, Harry Lee Dew (along with Ed Lawson, a brother of Glady Lawson Dew, who was the wife of Carroll Wood Dew, a first cousin of Harry Lee Dew) left Hamburg [Arkansas] in the early 1900's and went to Houston, Texas to attend a business school.
"While in Houston he became acquinted with his Dew cousins in Missouri City, Texas, a small town just south of Houston. Ruth Dew Lalley (the only living child of Thomas Tristram dew, a brother of John C. Dew, who was the grandfather of Harry Lee Dew) recalled that Harry Dew and Ed Lawson were frequent visitors to the Dew Plantation in Missouri City. She told told that the family there in Texas enjoyed very much having their Arkansas Cousin and his friend visit them."

Thomas Allen (Buddy) Dew (Dr) b. Aug. 5, 1942, d. Nov. 11, 2018
"Thomas Allen Dew died suddenly, Nov. 11, 2018, aged 76. A proud native of Warren, Ark., Tom was known for his energy, optimism, progressive politics, service to others and devotion to family — and, not to be forgotten, his repertoire of stories. A graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, he trained at Barnes Hospital/Washington University, specializing in pulmonary disease. In all, he practiced medicine for 42 years, largely at St. Luke's Hospital. His two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps included a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he earned the Bronze Star and Soldier's Medal. With his analytical mind, he enjoyed a good debate and was never timid about offering an opinion. As much as he loved his patients and the practice of medicine, he also enjoyed his retirement, with many happy hours spent traveling or at the U. City Commons and the Ruth Park Golf Course.
"His community service included tenures as president of the boards of the English Language School (serving refugees and immigrants) and St. Andrew's Episcopal-Presbyterian Foundation. He served on the board of the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders & Owners Foundation. And, most recently, he has been a devoted member of the board of Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill., one of the seven work colleges in the U.S.
"Survivors include Bettye, his wife of 54 years; his daughters Laura (Paul Revilla) and Allison (Cameron Sojan); his sisters, Jo Ann Reichen and Gingy (John) Cuthbertson; his brother Robert (Marci); his grandsons Patrick and Graham Revilla; his step-grandchildren, Zach, Lucy and Poppy Sojan; many nieces and nephews, and cherished friends."
